Thylacine / Tasmanian Tiger
Is the Tasmanian Tiger truly extinct or merely elusive? The mystery surrounding this iconic creature has captivated many. It's possible that deep within the untouched Tasmanian wilderness, a one-of-a-kind animal may still roam.
The Thylacine, also known as the Tasmanian Tiger, became extinct on the Australian mainland around 2000 years ago. However, a small population continued to survive in Tasmania, only to be despised by the settlers. Tragically, on September 7, 1936, the last known Tasmanian Tiger breathed its last at the Hobart Zoo, marking the first time an animal species had gone extinct in Tasmania.
Since I moved to Hobart, I have been captivated by the stories, reports, and alleged sightings of the Thylacine. Through my bronze sculptures, I aimed to unite Tasmania's past, present, and future. Despite being thought to be extinct, the Thylacine mystery still lingers in the minds of many as a remnant of the past. For those who believe it is still alive, it remains in the present. And for those who aspire to uncover or clone it, it holds a place in the future. In my artwork, I celebrated the unknown and conveyed the message that more must be done to safeguard our endangered species.
